10 Great Fall Foliage Drives
The High Road
Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico
Around the end of September as steamy Southwestern temperatures cool down, leaves begin to change color in Northern New Mexico. Spectacular displays spread among the deciduous trees from higher elevations through the end of October. The drive from Santa Fe to Taos is exquisite during this period.
The route: Drive from Santa Fe to Taos on Highway 76.
Roadside attractions: El Sancurario de Chimayo, a church built by devout New Mexico Catholics in 1816, is now known worldwide for the healing powers many visitors claim to find in the small chapel. Plan your trip at the end of October to see dozens of hot air balloons at the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally.
