Probably the only place in the entire Lone Star State to get a dose of fall color is Lost Maples State Park in Vanderpool, 85 miles northwest of San Antonio. It's also pretty remote, with sprawling cattle ranches its nearest neighbors. The drive meanders a bit and provides plenty of diversions along the way.

Start on Interstate 10 West and pick up Highway 16 north until you reach Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of the World. Channel your inner cowboy by shopping for western wear at The Cowboy Store on Main Street. Continue on to Medina where you'll pick up FM 337 west; in these parts, FM stands for Farm to Market Road. Stop at the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum before driving the last five miles north on FM 187 into Lost Maples.
