8 Great Fall Drives

Go leaf looking.

Arkansas / Oklahoma

The Talimena Scenic Drive in the Ouachita Mountains and National Forest runs from Mena, Arkansas to Talihina, Oklahoma, and is a National Scenic Byway. Perhaps the finest view along the 54-mile route is at the Rich Mountain Fire Tower, 15 miles west of Mena. You don't have to climb to the top of the 58-foot steel tower for stellar views; at an altitude of just over 2,600 feet, the view of the valleys is just as impressive.

Next up is Queen Wilhemina State Park, where you can play a round of miniature golf or visit the animal farm. Pick up a box lunch at the Queen Wilhemina Inn — known as Arkansas's Castle in the Clouds – before continuing west. You'll pass historic sites, a pioneer cemetery, and scenic overlooks before reaching Choctaw Vista at the end.
