A hundred years ago, vacationers from Buffalo, Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit would escape the summer heat on this island resort located in the straits between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Created in 1875, it was the second national park in the United States after Yellowstone and the first in Michigan. Today, Mackinac Island is a throwback to a slower and quieter time.
