Off-the-Beaten-Path Trips
By Liz Gray, FineLiving.com
Don't fight the crowds of fall leaf-peepers -- outsmart them by heading to these out-of-the-way fall destinations. These seven autumn trips less traveled are off the beaten path, but still offer the best of fall foods, foliage and fun.
Cape Ann
Cape Ann, a cluster of four small towns on Massachusett's northern shore, has maintained the allure of a quiet fishing village despite its proximity to Cape Cod and Boston.
What to do: Visit the old fishing town of Gloucester, the setting for the book and movie A Perfect Storm, for fishing trips, whale watching and fresh seafood. Rockport is a little more upscale, offering crafts, antiques, and breathtaking beaches.
When to go: September and October, when leaves are changing and before the Northeast's winter chill sets in.
