When you're traveling, staying at a bed and breakfast can be a cozy, intimate home-away-from-home experience. Norma Rasmussen has worked in the travel and catering industries for many years and now owns Pine View House Bed & Breakfast in Wrightwood, Calif., with her husband, John. She has the inside scoop on what questions you should ask before booking a B&B, so your stay will be as comfortable as possible:

  • Type of breakfast: Do they serve continental or a full-cooked breakfast?

  • Private bathrooms: Will I have my own bathroom, or will I need to share? Older B&Bs often don't have rooms with private baths.

  • Room service: Can I have breakfast in the room if I want to?

  • Kids and pets: Is my whole family welcome, or do the kids and dog need to stay home?

  • Allergies: Are there pets that live at the B&B that might affect my allergies? Are there featherbeds or down pillows?

  • Special diet needs: Can the B&B accommodate my special dietary needs?
