While doctors recommend eight hours of sleep each night for adults, the average American gets less than seven hours of sleep per night and one third get less than six hours. Here are ways to improve your chances of a good night's sleep:
- Exercise two to three hours before bedtime.
- Take a warm bath or shower.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine in the evening.
- Best sleep position: on your side with a pillow between your legs.
- Try placing a pillow under your knees to reduce strain on your lower back.
- Try resting on your right side to avoid pressure on your heart.
- The average sleeper changes position 20-30 times a night.
