Catalog Critic: Rotisseries
The Wall Street Journal Weekend : Episode FLWSJ-206

Rotisserie ovens look a lot like toaster ovens, except they have a power-driven axle inside that rotates a chicken, leg of lamb or other piece of meat. Catalog Critic tested the following rotisserie ovens:

Ronco Showtime Rotisserie 3000 Compact
Best overall, produced the juiciest meat and crispiest skin. The unit can hold a 6 lb. whole chicken, and almost every component is dishwasher safe. Also came with extras, including rubber gloves and a basket for seafood.

Baby George Rotisserie
Best value. This unit took up the least amount of counter space and can hold up to a 5 lb. chicken. Some components were hard to clean by hand.

Waring Pro CO900 Convection Oven
This combination rotisserie/convection oven took up a lot of counter space. Even though the manufacturer's cooking recommendations were followed, the roasted bird turned out looking unevenly pale.

Euro-Pro Rotisserie/Convection Oven
Produced tasty chicken, but getting the rotisserie rod into place was a bit of a struggle.

Hamilton Beach Toaster Oven/Broiler
This oven/broiler overcooked the bird — the meat came out dry and the skin was still pale. Basic timing guidelines provided by the manufacturer would have helped.
