When attending an Austrian-style party, it's important to know some of the proper etiquette and basic party phrases:

  • In Austria, it is a great honor to be invited into someone's home — it's a practice limited only to very close friends.
  • Visitors should offer to take off their shoes upon entering an Austrian home.
  • It is customary to bring a small gift — wine for the host, a bouquet for the hostess. But make sure to give an odd-number of flowers — as even-numbered bouquets are considered extremely unlucky.
  • It is customary to say "Guten Appetit" or "Mahlzeit" before eating, essentially, "Enjoy your meal."
  • At an Austrian party never introduce yourself — wait to be introduced by a third person and always address people by their last name, unless prompted otherwise. First names are reserved for family and friends only.
  • Shaking hands is the established form of greeting. The cheek kissing ritual should only be used if you are close friends with the person you are kissing.
