When in Spain or at a Spanish dinner party, here are some important dos and don'ts:
Be careful when gesturing with your hands. For example, the North American "okay" sign a circle formed with the thumb and forefinger is considered vulgar.
When calling over wait staff, place your palm facing the floor as you wave your hands or fingers.
When receiving a gift, always open it immediately and in front of the giver.
If you're bringing flowers to a host, make sure they're not dahlias or chrysanthemums, which the culture associates with death.
When finished with your meal, always place your knife and fork side by side on the plate. If you leave your utensils crossed or at opposite sides of the plate, you'll be offered more food.
When attending a Spanish dinner, be prepared to stay up late. Most restaurants in Spain don't even open until 9 p.m.
