Because India is a land of great spirituality and symbolism, there are some specific rules of etiquette and taboos that are good to know before attending an Indian dinner party:
Since the head is considered the seat of a person's soul in India, you shouldn't touch the top of someone else's head or even pat the hair of a child.
Try not to whistle or wink in public, as whistling is considered impolite and winking may be taken as an insult or a sexual proposition.
Since feet are considered to be unclean, if your shoes or feet touch another person's you must apologize immediately.
When invited to a party or event, never say "no" when offered additional food, as the word "no" has harsh implications in India. An evasive, "I'll try," or, "Not right now" are considered acceptable refusals.
Never thank your hosts at the end of a meal. "Thank you" is considered a form of payment and deemed as an insult.
