Dock on Cayo Espanto

AIR TIMES:

Cayo Espanto, Belize (106)
The crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea surround Cayo Espanto, a five-acre Central American island paradise off the coast of Belize. Follow a couple as they check in to one of the island's five luxury villas, each with a private pool and limitless ocean views, and discover why locals called this formerly deserted island the "Key of Fright."

Next, take a day trip to the mystical ruins of Altun-Ha, built centuries ago at the height of the Mayan Empire. Then take a half-hour boat ride to see the world's second-largest barrier reef, an underwater paradise that has made Belize a favorite destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. Finally, travel the streets of San Pedro on the nearby island of Ambergris Caye, and finish the day on a private beach at sunset, dining on grouper and fresh conch ceviche.

Cayo Espanto Facts:

  • Belize City airport on the mainland is approximately two hours flying time from either Houston or Miami. From Belize City, air taxi service is available to San Pedro. From there, take the Cayo Espanto private launch for the three-mile trip to the island.

  • There are only five guest villas on the island, and only fourteen guests are permitted on the island at any one time. The staff-to-guest ratio is two-to-one.

  • Each villa is assigned a houseman, who is on call for guests around the clock.
